Square Knot |
|
Called the Reef Knot outside the
U.S.A. |
| Use a square knot to tie the ends of a rope together or
join two ropes of the same thickness. Also used to tie bandages.
A square knot allows you to loosen the knot after it has been under
tension. DO NOT use for "mission critical"
work as it can come undone. When improperly tied (a granny knot), it is
difficult to untie. |
| Most people tie this knot with the simple rhyme: "Left
over Right and Under, Right over Left and Under" |
 |

|
|
| 1. Start with two pieces of rope that are close in
diameter. We'll call them rope A and rope B.( You can use the two ends of
the same rope, like when tying a parcel) |
| |
| 2. Hold the end of rope A in your left hand and the end
of rope B in your right hand. |
| 3. Cross rope A over rope B to form an
X. (Image 1) |

4. Wrap A once to the right around B,
just like the first step in tying a bow
in your shoelace. A is now sticking out to the right and B is to the left.
